LBW #345, "How Sweet the Name Of Jesus Sounds"
Devotion
Hymns teach us as we sing them. Martin Luther said, "He who sings prays twice." The meanings of the words in “How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds” deepen as we sing them.
When the Angel told Joseph that Mary would bear a son, he added, "And you shall call His name Jesus, for he will save His people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21). The name Jesus means, “The Lord is Salvation.” Jesus was sent to deliver us from our sins and its wages—death (Romans 6:23). Jesus was sent to deliver His people from their sins, not in their sins.
Sing this song through and think about who Jesus is to you. Now sing it again! Jot down all that Jesus is that makes you want to thank, praise and extol His name. God has given Him a name which is above every name (Philippians 2:9-11).
Prayer
Dear Father, thank you that I may keep on learning as I keep on singing. Amen.
