Verse 1O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever.
Verse 2Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, those he redeemed from trouble
Verse 3and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.
Verse 4Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to an inhabited town;
Verse 5hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them.
Verse 6Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress;
Verse 7he led them by a straight way, until they reached an inhabited town.
Verse 8Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind.
Verse 9For he satisfies the thirsty, and the hungry he fills with good things.
Verse 10Some sat in darkness and in gloom, prisoners in misery and in irons,
Verse 11for they had rebelled against the words of God, and spurned the counsel of the Most High.
Verse 12Their hearts were bowed down with hard labor; they fell down, with no one to help.
Verse 13Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress;
Verse 14he brought them out of darkness and gloom, and broke their bonds asunder.
Verse 15Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind.
Devotion
“Called, gathered, enlightened, and sanctified.” Perhaps Luther, scholar of the Hebrew Scriptures, was thinking of Psalm 107 as he described the work of the Holy Spirit of God. How grateful the psalmist is—and Luther as well— for God’s work of calling and gathering us wanderers out of the “desert wastes.” Whatever the name of your desert, coming home, being at home, is God’s great gift. How do we have thanks enough for the gift of being enlightened, flooded with freedom from bonds that once held us? The psalmist calls us to “meditate on the love of God” who provides so abundantly, deeply, and even inexorably for our well-being. To live our thanks is our response.
Prayer
Beloved shepherd, protect all who wander in the desert wastes, all who suffer from hunger, thirst and violence. Lead all your peoples to the places we need to be and free us to live fully as your dear ones. Amen.
