LBW #488, "Breathe on Me, Breath of God"
Devotion
Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he said this, he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit." (John 20:21-22)
This mystical moment offers a wonderful insight into the intimate relationship between Jesus and his followers. The word intimate is appropriate because personal space cannot be preserved when one gets close enough to be breathed upon! Certainly there are quick hugs that are fleeting and through which we can hold our breath. But Jesus' breathing on the disciples might just indicate a loving embrace that outlasts a passing moment.
Edwin Hatch picked up on this text and theme when he wrote the lyrics to today’s hymn. In the first verse, he seems to capture the point of this extraordinary experience. "Breathe on me, breath of God; Fill me with life anew, That I may love all that you love and do what you would do."
Prayer
Breathe upon us, O Lord, your breath of life. Strengthen us with the power of your presence. Inspire us with your living Spirit. Make us eager “to love all that you love and do what you would do.” Amen.
