Romans 8:22-27 (NRSV)

Verse 22We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; Verse 23and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. Verse 24For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? Verse 25But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
Verse 26Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. Verse 27And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
Devotion
When I opened my eyes, my family was gathered close. My daughter spoke softly and clearly, "Dad, you've been in an accident. Your neck was broken. The injury has resulted in you being a quadriplegic." My mind raced back to Fairview Hospital where, as an orderly, I had cared for the needs of a person with similar injuries. I knew what it was all about.
Of course I cried, and we cried. But I know that the Spirit helps me in my weakness. The Spirit intercedes and knows my many sighs. So I live with hope. And, as a person in Albert Lea, Minnesota, once told me, "I'm not perfect, but parts of me are excellent." Truly, God is my refuge and strength.
Prayer
Ever present God, we rejoice in knowing that your Spirit helps us in the midst of our weaknesses and that you are our refuge and source of strength. Amen.
