W&P #47, "Go, Make Disciples"
Devotion
In many churches we speak of “members” or “non-members.” Jesus never uses that language. He speaks of “disciples,” people who follow where he leads. We, who are disciples, are instructed to go and make more disciples, baptize them and teach them. Too often we begin by telling others what their story ought to be. Try, instead, to listen to the story others have to tell and then tell them the Jesus story.
We bring others into the Christian community by showing them our Christian example. We are called not only to tell the story but to model the life. Be salt of the earth, bringing zest to living. Be light for the world, reflecting the light of Christ and driving out darkness. Be a city on the hill, offering safety and comfort to weary travelers. Go, be disciples. Go, make disciples. Give Jesus to those around you.
Prayer
You have brought us through another week, O God, to gather on this day in the presence of sisters and brothers who share the name of Jesus. Lead us to one or two who have not yet heard the story so that we invite them to come with us. In the name of Jesus, our leader and our guide, Amen.
