Verse 53When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored the boat.
Verse 54When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him,
Verse 55and rushed about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was.
Verse 56And wherever he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed.
Devotion
People immediately recognized Jesus as soon as he stepped out of the boat. They rushed to him with their needs and he didn’t refuse. Even the fringe of his cloak had the power to heal.
One year, I’ll visit a super-store the morning after Thanksgiving to experience a crowd of people rushing to this or that irresistible deal. I suppose it’s a pity that this kind of comparison has to be made in my mind to get any semblance of the pressing crowd. At the congregation I serve, there has been an attempt to provide another worship service at another time. People are not breaking down the doors to get in.
The words of this passage create in me a longing to see and touch Jesus in such a way, but especially a longing for the kind of desperation that those people showed. The words bring a need to light.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I believe. Help my unbelief. Amen.
