2 Kings 4:42-44 (NRSV)
Read 2 Kings 4:42-44 on biblegateway.com
Verse 42A man came from Baal-shalishah, bringing food from the first fruits to the man of God: twenty loaves of barley and fresh ears of grain in his sack. Elisha said, "Give it to the people and let them eat." Verse 43But his servant said, "How can I set this before a hundred people?" So he repeated, "Give it to the people and let them eat, for thus says the Lord, 'They shall eat and have some left.'" Verse 44He set it before them, they ate, and had some left, according to the word of the Lord.
Devotion
There is a famine in the land. An offering is brought to Elisha, understood to be a holy man. Perhaps he will perform a miracle.
"Give the grain and the loaves of the offering to the people and let them eat," says the holy man.
It’s not enough. It won’t work. But Elisha insists. Not only will the hungry be fed, but there will be some left over. And so there was.
The Church stands at the crossroads of possibilities and probabilities. If we can communicate the vision God gives us, the calculus of life seems to change. We don’t have to understand the math. We’re just called to share the vision.
Prayer
Gracious God, there are possibilities in you beyond my understanding. Do not let me be limited by what I believe to be probable, but rather guide me into what you promise is possible. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
