LBW#197 "O Living Bread from Heaven"
Devotion
This hymn of praise in response to the Lord’s Supper is true to today’s gospel, John 6:24-35, where Jesus reminds us that the focus is to be on what God does for us in Jesus Christ, not on what we do. "My Lord, you here have led me within your holiest place, And here yourself have fed me with treasures of your grace...My Lord, I do not merit the favor you have shown, and all my soul and spirit bow down before your throne."
Jesus’ promise, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty" has been fulfilled. The hymn begins, "O living Bread from heaven, how well you feed your guest. The gifts that you have given have filled my heart with rest...You gave me all I wanted; this food can death destroy. And you have freely granted the cup of endless joy."
Prayer
Let us pray for the church, that God would lead many to eat the bread of heaven and drink the cup of salvation, never to hunger and thirst again. Gracious God, hear our prayer. Amen.
