WOV #706 “Eat this Bread, Drink This Cup”
Devotion
During the service of Holy Communion an elderly gentleman walked away from the communion rail a bit confused. Holding his bread, he turned to his wife and yelled for all to hear, “What do I do with this!”
I wonder how often I do the same. The gifts of God and the promises of life are there to be ingested and digested. Still, I hold those gifts in the palm of my hand not knowing what to do with them and in my human confusion yell, “What do I do with this?”
A glance at the gentleman’s wife revealed a bit of embarrassment, but I don’t know why. He just asked what we all ask. I could see her mouth form the words, “Just eat it. Put it in your mouth.”
Yes – do that! Just as the hymn sings, “Taste and see the goodness of God.”
Prayer
Bread of life and cup of love, teach us to rejoice in your presence. May we look upon you and never turn away. Save us in every affliction … and hear us as we pray. Amen.
