LBW #409, Praise and Thanksgiving
Devotion
About the text of this hymn, its author, Albert Frederick Bayly, writes: "This was written to meet the need for harvest thanksgiving hymns which remind us that we can thank God for [God’s] gifts rightly only if we are ready to do [God’s] will by sharing those gifts with others, so they can rejoice with us.” (Hymnal Companion to the LBW, p.446)
Unfortunately, with all the distractions in the world, it is possible to forget to give God praise. We need not let ourselves be caught in this position. For sooner or later we realize that it does not take very long for us to share with others what God has done, is doing, and will continue to do. Giving thanks and praise to God is what being a child of God is all about.
Prayer
“Almighty God our Father, your generous goodness comes to us new every day. By the work of your Spirit lead us to acknowledge your goodness, give thanks for your benefits, and serve you in willing obedience; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” (LBW p.40) Amen.
