Verse 29As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him. Verse 30There were two blind men sitting by the roadside. When they heard that Jesus was passing by, they shouted, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!" Verse 31The crowd sternly ordered them to be quiet; but they shouted even more loudly, "Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David!" Verse 32Jesus stood still and called them, saying, "What do you want me to do for you?" Verse 33They said to him, "Lord, let our eyes be opened." Verse 34Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes. Immediately they regained their sight and followed him.
Devotion
The two men’s sense of hearing was indeed sharpened, compensating for the absence of sight. In one sense, they had all they needed: enough to know and call upon the merciful and compassionate Jesus. In another sense, though, they wanted what we all want: to be whole, fully human. And our two blind men knew that to be fully human, one more thing was still needed: to follow Jesus.
Prayer
God of light, open our eyes to see and follow Jesus. Amen.
