LBW #80, “Oh, Wondrous Type! Oh, Vision Fair”
Devotion
And faithful hearts are raised on high
By this great vision’s mystery;
For which in joyful strains we raise
The voice of prayer, the hymn of praise.
The Transfiguration of Our Lord is a mystery to me. I see it as a preview of the glory of the Resurrected Christ, somewhat like Holy Communion is a "foretaste of the feast to come.” It is a gift from God to the church on earth that offers us a vision of what was, what is, and what is yet to be. Perhaps, the Transfiguration of Our Lord is more a clue to the mystery, than the mystery itself.
I am thankful that there is a greater reality beyond that which I can observe and explain. My 92-year-old mother tells me that she understands eternity as an adventure which is waiting for her. She says, "I don’t know what it will be like, but I look forward to it.” Her faithful heart is raised on high by this great vision’s mystery.
Prayer
Lord, we thank you for what was. We trust you with what is. We place our hope and trust in you for what is yet to be. Amen.
