Verse 8Guard me as the apple of the eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings,
Devotion
As the PLTS community gathers for Compline, we sing these words as a reminder of two of the many ways that God regards us. First, we are the apple of God’s eye; the beloved object of God’s affectionate gaze. This is, perhaps, the most helpful thing for us to remember on a daily basis: we are God’s beloved. Then the image shifts. Suddenly we go from the apple held in loving hands to the chick protected in a feathery cave. What a potent dichotomy.
Prayer
Loving God, thank you for holding me up as the apple of your eye, and for holding me close in the shadow of your wings. Amen.
