Verse 1Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, until the destroying storms pass by.
Devotion
There’s a saying: “A ship is safe in the harbor, but that’s not what ships were built for.” It’s often used to reflect on the peril that sometimes besets us in our daily lives. This psalm passage suggests that the harbor is right where we belong until the destroying storms pass by. But, upon reflection, isn’t this the place we always are? We would have a hard time sailing out of the harbor of God’s love and mercy. Maybe it’s not that we are in the harbor until storms pass but, rather, that we are always in the harbor of mercy, especially when the going gets rough.
Prayer
Christ who stilled the disciples’ hearts, calm my heart during life’s storms, that I, too, may navigate in safety. Amen.
