LBW #107, stanza 3, “Beneath the Cross of Jesus”
Devotion
I take, O cross, your shadow for my abiding place;
I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of his face;
Content to let the world go by, to know no gain nor loss,
My sinful self my only shame, my glory all, the cross.
Now we take the shadow of the cross for our “abiding place” and watch it disappear. The church is stark, stripped bare. Darkness descends. Shadows are gone. Instruments are quiet. Voices are muted. No Supper. And from the shadow-less cross Christ calls to us. “My people, what have I done to you? How have I offended you? Answer me. I led you out of Egypt, from slavery to freedom, but you led your Saviour to the cross.”
Prayer
We glory in your cross, O Lord, for by virtue of your cross joy has come into the whole world. Amen.
