WOV #669, "Come Away to the Skies"
Devotion
Charles Wesley wrote this charming hymn for his wife's birthday. It rings like a love song -- the love between two people, but also the tenderness of our life together in Christ. The verses give thanks for the encouragement we give one another, and the wonder of God's hand in our relationships.
It is fitting that Wesley's response to the love in his life is twofold: First, he is called into action: get up, sing, rejoice! Love is not stationary or stagnant. Love moves! And second, he is called to thanksgiving: God has done something amazing!
With the jubilant return of spring, and the joyful excitement of Ascension Day, the time has come to lift our eyes and our hopes to the heavens in love. Come away, arise, and sing praise to the risen Lord!
Prayer
Lord, we sing hallelujah for all of the wonderful ways you give us love. Thank you for the love between spouses, between parents and children, between neighbors and colleagues and friends, and especially between fellow Christians united in faith. May we sing of that love in all that we do. Amen.
