LBW, #161, "O Day Full of Grace"
Devotion
N.F.S. Grundvig, in this hymn, sings the life of Christ from birth to the cross and resurrection. Then he adds Pentecost, plus each believer’s death and appearance in heaven. Without Christ's birth, cross and resurrection, no promised Holy Spirit would bring us into God’s fold. Nor would the prospect of eternal life be our hope.
Everything that encompasses the Christian life is God’s gift. None of it is our accomplishment. If we had to earn or deserve it, no such songs on this would even be penned or sung.
What a relief to be spared such a burden by God’s grace. No wonder we burst into songs of praise now and in the next life as well. Pentecost sheds its light into the darkest corners of this world. Only hell is dark.
Prayer
Spirit of God alight on me and lighten my darkness. Amen.
