LBW 458, "Jesus, Priceless Treasure"
Devotion
My wife and I, while members of the St. Olaf College choir, were fortunate enough to sing this great chorale. One of our fondest memories is singing the positive words that conclude this composition. We could see from the countenance of our director, Olaf Christiansen, that he was caught up in it, as was the entire choir.
Of course it was partly that great wedding of words and music that stirred our emotions. But it was more. It was hearing the promise that "Those who love the Father, though the storms may gather, still have peace within." Through the music we proclaimed to all within earshot, "Jesus really is that priceless treasure!" It was as if we were saying, "Go for it, folks – buy the whole field! It is worth it, for therein lies the deepest, purest pleasure you'll ever find!" You know what? I feel exactly the same today! Go for it!
Prayer
Thank you, Lord, for great hymns, for they tell the story. Help us to sing them to ourselves and others. Amen.
