Renewing Worship 177, “Bread of Life from Heaven”
Devotion
I’ve been on a diet. It’s not that I don’t like the food I’m allowed to eat. It’s not that I’m not happy with the weight I’m losing. It’s just that sometimes, when I leave the table, I’m just not satisfied. Secretly I fantasize about sneaking into one of those obscene buffets and eating until I just can’t eat another ounce. Then I’d sit back, loosen my belt and slip into a food-induced coma. The truth is, my appetites kill me. My lusts for food, success, wealth and power (to name only a few of my hungers) are the death of me.
Thanks be to God that while my old self is dying, God is busy giving birth to a new self that knows no death. Thanks be to God, who through God’s son, provides the bread of life. That’s the bread I need. That’s the bread God gives.
Prayer
God of life, give us the bread that satisfies. We hunger for your grace. Amen.
