Devotion
The psalmist writes these wonderful promises in the present tense: “God promises peace … God’s salvation is near … Love and faithfulness meet … righteousness and peace kiss … Faithfulness springs forth … Righteousness looks down …” There is no waiting implied. These things are all now.
There is misery all around us. We’re pretty good at spotting it – sometimes so good that all we see is darkness.
Are we as good at spotting all the ways God is present, strong, faithful and good? Seeing how God acts here and now protects us from being overwhelmed by darkness. Looking for what is commendable lets us see God at work and encourages us. There really is so much that is beautiful and right and just. God’s salvation really is near. Ask God to help you see it. Then go looking for it. When you see it, thank God for it. Then go tell someone else about the good you saw and what God had to do with it.
Prayer
Dear God, show us your unfailing love and grant us your salvation. Keep us aware of the sorrows around us as well as the joys. Amen.
