LBW 454, “If God Himself Be for Me”
Devotion
The hymn says, “If God himself be for me …” When the focus is on God’s actions, God gets due credit. But lest we get lazy, the next phrase says, “I may a host defy.” Some effort is required on our part – some ability to perceive God’s will, some obedience, some action. Of course, God is the main actor. Without God, we won't get far. So, it’s to God’s credit when something goes well for you, or when you do something courageous and important.
When God gets due credit, God’s strength can flow through you. Your expectations for yourself are reasonable. You can enjoy the task at hand. God leads others to share in what you are doing. When God gets the credit, it feels a lot more like you get to do things and less like you have to do them.
It is up to you to take time to learn, listen, follow and obey God. And even that is to God’s credit, for God’s Spirit will help you do those things.
“The sun that cheers my spirit is Jesus Christ my king.” Thanks be to God!
Prayer
Dear God, thank you for being for us. Thank you for the guidance, strength, purpose and joy you give us. Help us see these things, and help us remember who gets the credit when life is good. Amen.
