Devotion
Today, we remember the work of Florence Nightingale and her willingness to reach out with hands of healing in her time and place. In the midst of overwhelming circumstances, it would have been easy to turn away. Instead, she shared the gifts she had been given.
About 20 or so women in our church have been knitting and crocheting prayer shawls. As we work, we pray for people in need of healing. Anyone is welcome to take a shawl to someone who is in need of care, healing, support or love.
We are not all experts! Sometimes the shawls have mistakes and flaws. And yet, for many, their shawl becomes a touchstone of God’s love for them. As I make visits, I find people wrapped up in their shawls – wrapped up in God’s healing touch. We receive notes and letters from people who share how they have experienced healing, comfort and peace through this ministry.
These shawls have become a visible sign of the kingdom for us here in Pepin.
Prayer
Loving Jesus, Great Physician, thank you for the life and work of Florence Nightingale and others who have shared your healing touch. The brokenness in our world and in our own lives is great … but your power to heal is greater. Amen.
