WOV 785, “Weary of All Trumpeting”
Devotion
Today’s hymn speaks to the weariness and emptiness of life lived for one’s self. We all hear the songs that are filled with “promise, non-fulfilling,” seductive little ditties that worm their way into our lives promising everything and fulfilling nothing.
Our Lord calls us to new life found in the victory of the cross over death for us. Our Lord gave up everything, surrendered everything – first to be one of us, and again when he died for us. He gives us the same: in surrendering all to Jesus, “lowly Lord, Servant King,” we give up the weariness of this world for the absolute and already fulfilled promise of our God – eternal partnership in the splendor of God’s own Son, Jesus the Christ.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, your way goes against everything this world would have us be and do and know! Gaining by giving up everything. Living by loss. Suffering. Triumph in surrender. Victory in death on a cross. It’s just unheard of! Give us strength, Lord; give us courage, to walk in your ways, against the ways of the world. Amen.
