Devotion
The psalmist humbly prayed for a deeper understanding of God’s laws and commands, expressing his desire to live in obedience to those commands.
Before we can live a life of obedience, we first need the gift of understanding. The mission statement of our congregation begins with the words, “We hear the shepherd’s voice and follow him … ” First we must hear the voice of our Good Shepherd; only then are we in a position to follow.
What do you hear God saying to you? I ask myself this question and, more often than not, I don’t know how to respond. I confess with the psalmist a desire to live my life in obedience to God. Yet why am I not more clear about what God would have me do? The psalmist reminds me to pray for understanding and to listen more intently for the Shepherd’s voice to discern God’s will for my life.
Prayer
Loving Shepherd, let me hear your voice loud and clear. Tell me plainly the desires of your heart for me, that I may follow you and walk in your ways. Amen.
