LBW #486, "Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart"
Devotion
The second verse of this great hymn doesn’t ask for a whole lot! There are no requests for impossible dreams, ecstatic prophecies, removal of our human condition, visits from the heavenly host, or opening of the skies. That seems reasonable.
The only plea is that the light shine a bit brighter in our inner lives. At first this seems like a most modest request. The reality, however, is that it is a huge expectation. That’s really what the “Serenity Prayer” is all about: “Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
Prayer
God, thank you for knowing me better than I know myself. Bring your light into my darkest corners and help me to better be the person you created me to be. Amen.
