Verse 5For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from him.
Verse 6He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
Verse 7On God rests my deliverance and my honor; my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.
Verse 8Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah
Verse 9Those of low estate are but a breath, those of high estate are a delusion; in the balances they go up; they are together lighter than a breath.
Verse 10Put no confidence in extortion, and set no vain hopes on robbery; if riches increase, do not set your heart on them.
Verse 11Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this: that power belongs to God,
Verse 12and steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord. For you repay to all according to their work.
Devotion
We like to be honored. Whether the venue is the movies, television, education, sports or science, we have elaborate ceremonies to celebrate who among us is most deserving of an award.
If the world wishes to honor us for some achievement, so be it. But this is not the honor we as Christians covet. We follow the One who did not seek glory for Himself. Our honor is in Christ. He has freed us from a meaningless existence. He asks that we be faithful and that's daunting enough. "On God rests my deliverance and my honor." (v. 7)
Peter writes, "You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people. Once you were no people, but now you are God's people." What more do we want? If you can make the claim, "I am a member of the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints," there is nothing greater that you can say about yourself. You are honored!
Prayer
Lord, we are honored to be a part of your family. We do not deserve that honor. Help us to accept it in humility and in service of others. Amen.
