Verse 9If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son.
Verse 10Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony in their hearts. Those who do not believe in God have made him a liar by not believing in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. Verse 11And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Verse 12Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. Verse 13I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.
Devotion
I knew I had the job. I really did. A vice president had said, “It’s all arranged. You just have to jump through some hoops. Don’t worry.”
“Really?” I asked. "Okay." I trusted his words. He’d always told me the truth the previous 16 years. I went into that interview relaxed and confident, answering questions with more frankness and forthrightness than if had I no confidence of securing the job. And sure enough, I got it.
Likewise, in today’s text John is telling us, “We have eternal life. Don’t wring your hands over it. Don’t wake up in the middle of the night tossing and turning. Trust the word of God in Jesus Christ. For in him you have life, and that has eternity written all over it.”
Taking John’s message to heart can give you a forthrightness and confidence to make life now a joy instead of a burden.
Prayer
Lord, guide us in our waking and sleeping to trust in your life that is ours. Amen.
