LBW 157, “A Hymn of Glory Let Us Sing”
Devotion
In this hymn we hear that Ascension Day is Christ’s “glorious triumph day.”
I can still remember the day our son graduated. He graduated well, with lots of cords and paraphernalia on his robe. But as he moved on from this triumph, he left our house forever. Oh, we could call him, but he wasn’t there. I miss him. I want him. But he had to go to be who he truly was.
I would love to be with Jesus on the Mount of Olives and cling to his feet. “Take me with you,” I’d say. “I want to go, too.” In his absence, we are left with incompleteness and emptiness in our hearts.
Except … he gave us his Spirit. When I rely on God’s spirit, I know I can make it – until that time I really get to cling to his feet. It is what gives death meaning.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, come and let your spirit dwell within me. Amen.
