LBW 159, “Up through Endless Ranks of Angels”
Devotion
In this hymn we ask God to send his Spirit to guide us in our “wanton wandering.”
I don’t know about you, but I’ve done a lot of wandering in my life. I’ve traveled many miles across the United States. I’ve traveled through birth, adolescence, early adulthood and now late adulthood. I’ve traveled through a bunch of ideas and tossed a lot of them away.
But the Spirit of God has somehow put people, circumstances and just plain life in front of me, turning me in a direction for which I am later grateful. I have come to realized that life is not about “arriving,” it’s about wandering with God’s Spirit. It’s about being where you are, not where you wish you were.
Life is about coming to terms with the prisons we erect for ourselves. What God’s Spirit will do is guide us out of those prisons and, in time, to the life promised us all.
Prayer
In our wanderings, find us, Lord, and guide us to the land of promise and hope. Amen.
