LBW 294, “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less”
Devotion
The Apostle Paul wrote, “Faith, hope and love abide” (1 Corinthians 13:13). Everything else is passing away. He knew that the risen Christ was the source of the gifts of the Spirit.
Edward Mote (1797-1874) is not well known despite giving us one of the great hymns of the church. The Englishman was converted at age 16 and became a pastor at 57.
His perception of Christ and the atonement is biblically centered. Hope is symbolized by the sign of an anchor. “My anchor (Christ) holds within the veil” Mote wrote. “He then is all my hope and stay.” We join in his witness to the world, proclaiming “no merit of my own I claim, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name. On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand.” Hebrews 10:23 likewise exhorts us, “Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope.”
Prayer
Lord Jesus, we praise you forever for being our righteousness in the raging flood of life. Amen.
