LBW 524, “My God, How Wonderful Thou Art”
Devotion
This hymn is found in the “Praise, Adoration” section of the Lutheran Book of Worship. It dares to wonder about God. Who is God? How can we describe God’s appearance? What is God’s love like? Why does God care for me? The author seems to suggest that the answers are beyond our imagination, yet it’s OK to wonder and be amazed in our limited way.
Kids are great at wondering about God. They have a million questions. Unfortunately, we adults tend to shut them down. In the past, I have had kids ask what God looks like. I gave the typical adult shut down answer, “Nobody knows.”
In the future, I hope that when I’m asked that question again, I will respond, “I don’t know, but it’s sure wonderful to think about. What do you think God looks like?”
Prayer
Lord God, on this day of worship, we are amazed at you and your creation. Lord, we marvel in your wonderful imagination. Amen.
