LBW 228, “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”
Devotion
Out here in what was once called the “Wild West,” we have numerous reminders of the safety afforded by forts and fortresses. Around us are cities with such names as Fort Collins and Fort Morgan, Colo., and historic locations such as Fort Laramie and Fort Bridger, Wyo. These provided safety to the settlers via walls with huge doors, able to withstand attacks and through lookout towers defended by trained soldiers and cannon.
Following the psalmist, Martin Luther speaks of God’s being a mighty fortress, the “fortressissimo” of fortresses. We ourselves are defenseless against the evil one, whose mission is to do us harm. We on earth alone have nothing to match the devil’s weapons. When the devil attacks, we seek shelter in the Lord. The Lord sends himself, Christ Jesus. The Lord brings victory; the Lord is victory. We stand safely in the sure and certain hope of God’s word of promise.
Prayer
Lord God, send your Holy Spirit to speak your word of promise to us to rebuff the ancient foe when he assaults us. Amen.
