LBW 539, “Praise the Almighty”
Devotion
Hymn writer Johann Daniel Herrnschmidt was born to a German pastor’s wife. He followed in his father’s footsteps, receiving his first call as an assistant pastor in his father’s congregation in Halle. He wrote “Praise the Almighty,” inspired by Psalm 146, and most of his other hymns, during that first call. Translated into English by Australian Lutheran pastor Alfred E.R. Brauer in 1925, the text to this hymn has since undergone other alterations.
“Praise the Almighty” emphasizes the subject of our adoration: the Lord. Not just with song, but with our whole being – body and soul – and life. The verses call all who are blessed by the Lord to join with others in exultation to the triune God. This is worship, a life-long response of praise to the Holy One, who offers salvation through Christ.
Prayer
Almighty and majestic God, may we sing your praises always. May our souls join in song as heaven and earth worship you as the Holy One. Amen.
