LBW 184, "In His Temple Now Behold Him"
Devotion
This hymn by Henry J. Pye, with a tune by Robert Leaf, is not intended for Christ the King Sunday. It's designated for the festival of baby Jesus' presentation in the Temple. But if ever there were a hymn that celebrates the glory of the King of Israel hidden in human flesh, this is it.
The hymn begins quietly, its unison arrangement in a minor key giving it a mystical, pensive, wondering quality. It builds gradually, adding astounding sharps and flats and a lovely harmony. It ends in thundering acclamation, breaking into four-part harmony in a major key that will leave the congregation breathless. The effect can bring tears to the eyes and the heart to the throat as one realizes that here "in the arms of her who bore him," here is "the incarnate God Most High!"
Perhaps if we start singing this underused hymn now, we will be ready to sing it with enthusiasm on Christ the King Sunday.
Prayer
How awesome is your coming, Lord – you, an everlasting king, hidden in our form! Grant us great joy in welcoming you. Amen.
