Verse 29Then he told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees; Verse 30as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. Verse 31So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Verse 32Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Verse 33Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Verse 34"Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day catch you unexpectedly, Verse 35like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. Verse 36Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man."
Devotion
Life as an adult in my college town has some interesting implications. My old stomping grounds are no longer my old stomping grounds. The building where I spent most of my time has been demolished and a new one built in its place. The former hot spots my friends and I frequented have disappeared. City expansion has made the town I remember nearly unrecognizable.
Despite these changes, there are things that remain the same. Relationships that were an essential part of my life 15 years ago remain important. Several college buddies live nearby and are among my closest friends. My alma mater plays an important role in my life as I mentor students in vocational pursuits.
While many things have changed, the most important things remain. Jesus spoke of things that would pass away from generation to generation, promising that God’s word would never pass away. The most important thing remains.
Prayer
God of a changing world, though heaven and earth may pass away, your love and faithfulness will never pass away. Increase our trust in you so that we may live in hopeful expectation of your ever-present and in-breaking reign. Amen.
