LBW #75, “Bright and Glorious is the Sky”
Devotion
The Bethlehem star was for real. It was the conjunction of bright planets in a late B.C. year. So said Professor Kaufmanis, a World War II Latvian refugee, in numerous lectures around the Twin Cities area. We needed that agreement with St. Matthew in an age when skeptics were seeking to undermine our confidence in the Bible.
But even the real star long ago faded from view. Is there then something tangible that we can see and follow to the Christ Child? Grundtvig, in our hymn (verses 5 and 6) says, “yes.” Following Luther, he directs our attention to the Scriptures. The Bible, to use a metaphor, is our star. It lights our way to the Lord. As the psalmist says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.” (119:105)
Prayer
Lord, many have lost their way. Shine the light of your Good News on them and on us. Amen.
