LBW #309, "Lord Jesus, Think on Me"
3 Lord Jesus, think on me,
Nor let me go astray;
Through darkness and perplexity
Point out your chosen way.
4 Lord Jesus, think on me,
That, when the flood is past,
I may the eternal brightness see
And share your joy at last.
Devotion
Lord Jesus, think on me.
Synesius of Cyrene, who wrote this hymn in the 5th century, understood philosophy better than I do. I keep working to understand that God is subject, not object. I think this hymn is oriented to the Lord Jesus as the subject; not an object that I might master and control. Instead, I submit to Jesus.
Lord Jesus, think on me, nor let me go astray; through darkness and perplexity point out your chosen way.
My faith has always been in the context of a life subjected to Jesus. My intellect rebels against those who claim they know what heaven is like, making it an object to be grasped. My intellect rebels against claims that Christ is returning at some certain time. My faith carries me in the flood of present events with the certain hope of eternal life with Jesus.
Lord Jesus, think on me, that, when the flood is past, I may the eternal brightness see and share your joy at last. Amen.
