ELW 430 and LBW 171, “Rejoice, for Christ is King”
Devotion
Sundays are “hallelujah” days on which to joyfully praise the Lord. On Thursday we observed the feast of the Ascension, which anticipates the final Sunday of Pentecost, “Christ the King” Sunday. It is in that spirit that we sing in today’s hymn, “He sits at God’s right hand till all his foes submit and bow to his command and all fall beneath his feet.”
By faith we await that day with confidence. We may seem like dreamers to a world that measures success by wealth, sensual pleasure and power. But it is the Spirit that bears witness with our spirit (Romans 8:16) that enables us to trust that “this Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way” (Acts 1:11).
One of the things we can do to praise the Lord is to “provoke one another to love and good deeds” and “not neglecting to meet together” on the Lord’s Day (Hebrews 10:24-25).
Prayer
Lord Jesus, we rejoice that you would be our King. Amen.
