LBW 227, "How Blest Are They Who Hear God's Word"
Devotion
In Deuteronomy 30, Monday’s text, we heard that God’s word is near. How true. Today there are so many Bible translations that it is hard to name them all. What a far cry from the Middle Ages when a whole parish had but one copy, which was chained to a pillar. Besides, it was not in the language that the people spoke and, even if it had been, most of them could not read.
Now virtually every one of us can read and each home has numerous copies for all to use. In addition, at least the women’s groups have regular Bible study and most parishes have Sunday morning Bible classes. In confirmation instruction and in Sunday school, our children learn Bible stories and content. Are we then biblically literate and informed? God Pause readers probably are. But we hear that biblical illiteracy is widespread among us. Availability does not mean usage.
Prayer
Lord, how thankful we are to have your word so near and so clear. May my family and my fellow church members gladly hear and learn it. Amen.
