LBW 453, "If You but Trust in God to Guide You"
Devotion
This hopeful hymn is about trust, another word for faith. Five times in four verses the writer invites the singer to trust God. Why? God is always here, has changeless love for us, knows what our needs are, has even gone to the cross for us and keeps his promises. Why wouldn’t we then trust God? Verses two and three tell us there will be tough times.
Today we attended a funeral. The author queries: At such a time, does God love you less? Yes, today there was weeping. Our poet seems to focus on how futile sorrow and anger are in coping with troubles. He may be too stoical for our tastes. He also tends to accept our troubles as God-sent, which may not agree with our world view, either. Yet, one probably will agree with him that cheer and contentment can return because of trust in God.
Prayer
Lord, I commit everything to your hands. Without you, I have no one to whom to cling. Amen.
