Verse 5The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!" Verse 6The Lord replied, "If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you. Verse 7"Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, 'Come here at once and take your place at the table'? Verse 8Would you not rather say to him, 'Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink'? Verse 9Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? Verse 10So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, 'We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!'"
Devotion
Some people find their security in their nationality; some in their social position and privilege. Here the text invites us, as children of the King, to a wholesome dependence on God. Therefore, my position in Christ is not dependent on the size of my faith, but in where I stand in Christ.
As a child as well as a servant of this King, may I be found at my duty post, happy to be there and free to serve. While engaged in my duties as a child of God, may my service be guided and guarded by a sense of fear and reverence for God. May I not be idle but busy doing the work to which I am called.
Prayer
Lord, as a steward of your manifold grace, help me to constantly guard against the temptation that I know it all. Help me in my journey here below to be guided by your Holy Spirit, to walk with you in fear and trembling. At the end of all this, let me say that I am a worthless servant. Amen.
