Devotion
Some years ago I was holding hands with members of D.D.’s family around his bed while doctors removed the machines that kept him breathing. They knew he would be dead soon. They were full of tears and fears. But one of his children kept saying “Dad, don’t fight it, Dad, don’t … ” The son had come to terms with reality and was ready to let go rather than have his father survive on machines.
Jesus’ disciples had seen him through agony and death. They had their fears and doubts. But as risen Lord, he blessed them and commissioned them as witnesses with the promise of the Holy Spirit. Though hidden from sight, they knew that his parting was not an end to his love and presence.
When tempted and tossed by life’s situations, may we be encouraged that in praising God fears are silenced, sorrows changed and hopes kept alive until Christ returns.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you for your comfort through the Holy Spirit. Thank you for all those who proclaim your gospel of repentance and forgiveness. Guide us by your Spirit that we too may praise and worship you each day. Amen.
