Devotion
The image of the “dark night of the soul,” most notably referenced by St. John of the Cross, has become a common description of spiritual despair. Our worries and struggles are much more troublesome at 2 or 3 a.m. On the longest night of the year, it seems creation gives more space and time for such despair. However, there are other images of night, like “dark sacred nights” from the song “What a Wonderful World.” Our days and nights are the sacred space and time into which God sends the spirit of God’s son into our hearts. We are no longer slaves to despair, but heirs to the realm of God.
Prayer
Light of the world, come and bless our days and our nights with your presence and peace. Amen.
