Verse 14Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, Verse 15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. Verse 16For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. Verse 17Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. Verse 18Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.
Devotion
Today we hear of how Jesus saw himself in his relationship to others, “like a brother in every respect” subject to all that life would bring his way. Like me. Like you. All this is for our sake, so that we can live through all that comes our way. It helps to know how very close he is to us, especially when we live through and beyond the dying and death of a loved one – a brother, a sister, a dear friend.
Before an older brother of mine died two years ago, we would meet to listen, laugh and lament together in what and how we shared in our life and family. We were so very close. So Jesus is like a brother! Wow! What deep meaning that has for me and perhaps even more to you.
Prayer
Dear God, we thank you for giving us a brother like Jesus. Amen.
