“Crucified by Your Grace,” text by Erik Lopez
1 Though you slay me,
I will trust thee
Crucified by your grace!
You bid me come and die,
Offer me new life,
Crucified by your grace!
You bore my sin, my cross, my shame,
Yet I bear your name,
Crucified by your grace!
Chorus
Justified! Justified! Just if I never sinned
It slays me!
Justified! Justified! Just if I never sinned
It kills me!
Not I who lives, but Christ instead
Crucified by your grace!
2 And I’m a dead man walking,
Silenced all my talking,
Crucified by your grace!
A covered mouth astonished,
of all my sins forgotten,
Crucified by your grace!
Generosity gone wild
Adopted me as the king’s child
Crucified by your grace!
Repeat chorus
Bridge
Who’d ever think the greatest gift a crucifix, dead to sin, alive to Christ is how I live!
Crucified with Christ is where you’ll find me,
Eternal life in Christ is where I wanna be
Crucified by your grace!
3 What is man that you should mind me?
Devising plans so you could find me.
Crucified by your grace!
I enter your throne room lifeless,
To hear you welcome me is priceless.
Crucified by your grace!
Trampled grace may be in outcome,
But to me that’s not an option,
Crucified by your grace!
Repeat chorus
Devotion
In yesterday’s devotion, I explained the paradox in my song, “Crucified by Your Grace,” that God’s grace slays us. Some might ask, “Well, how is that attractive? Why so much death and gloom? What about the resurrection? What about the uplifting promise of new life?”
All of these are legitimate concerns. But to me, death is good news! Do you think that resurrection implies self-improvement or enhancement? Why, of course not. It doesn’t even suggest an extreme makeover.
Rather, our Lord sets out to “kill us with kindness,” a kindness found only in the death and resurrection of his Son. As a result, we too “ … will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his” (Romans 6:5). Thus, this is the joy of his murderous grace: that I, along with my condemnation and shame, am buried. Therefore, I partake in his resurrection and not my own.
Prayer
Lord, I am humbled that you would find my life worth dying for. Help me cling to the promise of your most gracious love. Amen.
