We Plow the Fields and Scatter, ELW 681
Devotion
It's the long waiting season for the farmers, the time of praying for enough rain (but not too much), for keeping an eye on weeds and pests, for measuring growth in anticipation of the harvest. It's gotten to be a pretty exact science for some farmers! Yet all it takes is one storm to throw the planning and preparation out the window. What to do then?
The hymnwriter has an idea: keep life in perspective. We may plow and scatter, we may plan and organize and think we have everything under control, but ultimately, it is God who will bring forth whatever fruit is borne in our lives. All we can do is trust that God is watching over us, leading us, sending angels and the Spirit to care for us, and blessing us in ways we cannot imagine or control. So plow your fields, scatter your seeds, pray for rain (but not too much), and believe that God will bring forth the growth.
Prayer
Lord, we know that all good gifts around us are sent from heaven above. We thank you, Lord, we thank you, Lord, for all your love. Amen.
