Amazing Grace, LBW 448 & ELW 779
1 Amazing grace! — how sweet the sound —
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
2 ’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
and grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
the hour I first believed!
3 Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
’tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
4 The Lord has promised good to me;
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures.
5 When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’d first begun.
Devotion
One of my favorite memories from when my children still liked to be rocked to sleep was singing Amazing Grace to them. I love Amazing Grace, but that is not the reason I sang it to them every night. I sang it to them because it was the only hymn for which I had all the words memorized. When they learned to talk they would ask me to sing “That song about when you were blind.” One of my kids even asked me if I had really been blind. The answer to that would be “Yes, everyday at some point I am blind (and lost and wretched.) And on the good days, when I’m found and my sight is restored, the scales fall from my eyes."
Prayer
On my blind days, Lord, help me to see the path you put before me. Amen.
