Jesus Only on the Mountain
Jesus Only on the Mountain
Jesus only on the sea
Jesus only in the garden
There in dark Gethsemane
Jesus only up to Calvary
Jesus only on the cross
Jesus only in all suffering
All things else are empty dross
Devotion
What did you want to see?
This hymn, written by Dr. Samuel Miller in the middle of the last century, recalls when Peter could see “Jesus only” on the Mount of Transfiguration.
This week we have the call of the disciples in John. Philip says to Nathaniel, “come and see.” Our invitation to new followers is the same “come and see.”
Here’s my challenge. For me the life of baptism has meant dying daily to my blasphemy. So instead of “Jesus only,” my words are always “if only.” If only I had done something differently, things would be better than they are. I must die daily to my temptation to reinvent my past and encourage the regrets that come from my failures.
But for the “if only” in me to die, God must raise my eyes to see “Jesus only.” Preach Jesus only and we become free to help others see.
Prayer
Thank you, Holy Spirit, for raising up Jesus only before us each day so that our lives may be reborn in his. Amen.
