Devotion
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
“It is hard to ‘be quiet’ in a position of leadership” quipped a retired missionary. In other words, pastors like to talk. Good communication is necessary in ministry and in most professions today. To say communication is rapidly changing is an understatement. It might seem that the way we communicate now does lend itself to peace and quiet. Sitting in front of a computer, one can choose to “chat” or not, thereby going days without speaking face to face with another person. Yet, in all that relative silence, there is no real sense of “quietness.” Being quiet is more than not talking. Truly being quiet means finding a way to clear one’s mind of clutter in order to focus on listening. The Benedictine meditation of Lectio Divina helps us settle into a place of attentive listening. In quiet stillness, we hear God’s promise spoken.
Prayer
O Lord, we crave the quiet stillness of your presence. Settle our minds, open our hearts, and unplug our ears as we practice being still. When mountains tremble and waters roar, hold us by your strength, and in quiet confidence, by your presence. In Jesus' name. Amen
