Romans 13:12-14 (NRSV)
Read Romans 13:12-14 on biblegateway.com
Verse 12the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; Verse 13let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. Verse 14Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
Devotion
In the darkness our selfish, escapist, apathetic, unloving, hedonistic selfishness is hidden. In the darkness these things find their cover, they thrive. But the light of day makes them visible, even to us. Paul calls us to “put on the armor of light” (Romans 13:12) to bravely see our lives clearly. Paul calls us to “put on Jesus Christ” (Romans 13:14), the one who is nearing to us this Advent season.
Prayer
O God, as we wait for the light of your Son, Jesus Christ, to illuminate our lives, to break through the cover of darkness, grant that we ready ourselves to follow you always as in the daylight. Amen.
